Treatment of mimic (dynamic) wrinkles with Botulinum toxin

Many wrinkles form due to the repetitive contraction of our facial muscles. These are known as mimic or dynamic wrinkles. A typical example that is often regarded as particularly troublesome is the wrinkle formed between the eyebrows, in the region known as the glabella. A glabellar wrinkle often causes the face to have a worried and negative expression. Botulinum toxin is ideal for the treatment of mimic wrinkles. The most well-known Botulinum toxin product is Botox®. As a result, most people refer to this treatment simply as “Botox treatment.” The toxin is actually a protein produced by a certain strain of bacteria that prevents the contraction of muscle fibers or sweat glands. By varying the injected dose, certain facial muscles can be weakened or fully inactivated. As the muscles relax, so does the skin overlying those muscles, resulting in a smoothening of wrinkles. The treatment is effective for approximately three to four months.

Indirect treatment of static wrinkles with Hyaluronic acid

Static wrinkles form as we age, primarily due to loss of volume and tension in the connective tissue, as well as from the effects of gravity. In treating deep static wrinkles, folds, and sunken areas, Hyaluronic acid has demonstrated excellent results when used as a filler. Hyaluronic acid is a clear, gel-like substance that can be found naturally within humans and animals. Hyaluronic acid can be easily injected into the skin using a blunt-tipped needle, where it can be evenly distributed within a facial region. The end result is a smooth, natural transition between treated and untreated areas of the face. Because the tip of the injection needle is round, there is a lower risk of damaging a blood Bessel, which in turn lowers the risk of hematoma formation. Hyaluronic acid is not only a great treatment for fine creases (such as crow’s feet or wrinkles of the upper lip), but also for medium to deep folds (such as furrows of the forehead or folds surrounding the nose and mouth). In our office, we don’t directly inject Hyaluronic acid into the wrinkle. Rather, the product is injected into areas of the face that once contained more volume, such as the cheekbone or chin. This added volume increases the skin tension and exerts a smoothening effect on the area of the face in which bothersome wrinkles were located. In addition, the Hyaluronic acid products of today are equally suitable to be used as fillers for areas such as the lips and tear trough, as well as to tighten up the earlobes. The effects of the treatment last between six and 24 months, depending on the product used.
